The Arts of Singapore
Singapore certainly has an artistic side to it, and that side is growing more and more on a consistent basis! Both visual and performing arts continue to blossom in Singaporean culture. There are many wonderful opportunities to take in the arts. Singapore is certainly not as ancient of a country as many of its neighbors, but just as the combination of other traditional Oriental influences, combined with Western ideas, has impacted Singapore’s culture in every other way. In addition, the arts have been touch by this unique mixture of cultures as well, creating something distinct, refined, and Singaporean!
Visual Art
There is an Arts and Museums district near City Hall in the core of downtown Singapore. The options for cultural enrichment here include the Singapore Art Museum, The Substation, and the National Museum of Singapore. The National Gallery, house in a historic building that was once the City Hall and Supreme Court building, was just open in 2015, and contains over 8000 works of art from Singapore and the rest of Southeast Asia. It is the world’s largest collection! There are also many galleries to be found in The Gillman Barracks which is a cluster of international galleries and other cultural institutions. Such as restaurants, in one centralized home of historic, conserved colonial barracks.
Performance
Music is still budding and growing in Singapore, but the Singapore Symphony Orchestra can often be found playing the Esplanade Theatre in Marina Bay. There are also many bars and cafes which feature bands who will be playing jazz, rock ‘n roll, blues, and more. Depending on when you are planning to be in Singapore. There is a good chance that touring artists, such as DJs and multinational acts, will be stopping in the city; if they are coming through Asia, such artists almost always make a stop in Singapore.
If you are looking for theatre, it is quite common for high quality productions to be available to attend in Singapore. The Singapore Repertory Theatre puts on very famous shows, in English, and the Esplanade Theatre is often putting on theatrical events. Mastercard Theatre at Marina Bay Sands has gained a reputation for staging fantastic iterations of beloved Broadway musicals. As well as booking great international dance and music acts.
Festivals!
Many of the festivals and religious holidays in Singapore are infuse with traditional arts. Both to enjoy watching, and also to participate in! With the wide range of religious holidays, this is a fantastic way to enjoy the creative celebrations of many different cultures which all exist harmoniously within Singapore!
